FUNCTIONAL PURPOSE

The purpose of this position is to provide district-wide support to Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) and students in understanding and use of Alternative/Augmentative Communication (AAC) and provide professional leadership to the team of SLPs across the district. The Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) will work directly with the Assistive Technology Team & Director of Related & Itinerant Services. As a member of the Assistive Technology team, the SLP will conduct Alternative/Augmentative Communication (AAC) evaluations & train school based SLPs to conduct evaluations, trial devices and implement AAC across school settings. As the Lead SLP, the SLP will collaborate and plan with SLPs, develop & present professional development (PD) for SLPs, coordinate and set up teletherapy, and participate in recruitment & retention efforts.  

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serving as a professional point of contact for SLPs regarding caseload management, appropriate use of diagnostic tools and therapy techniques.
  • Planning and presenting professional development for the SLP team to ensure ongoing use of evidence-based practices across the district.
  • Assisting with recruitment and retention of SLPs to ensure continuity of services for all students.
  • Coordinating and overseeing telehealth speech-language services.
  • Collaborating with colleagues and parents to share information and expertise to plan and implement effective communication programs for EC students.
  • Participating as a member of a multidisciplinary team to make recommendations for augmentative communication and assistive technology accommodations and strategies.
  • Participating in IEP meeting for students who need augmentative communication and assistive technology supports for the purpose of developing an appropriate IEP.
  • Proficiently use technology to communicate, compile reports, and collect data for the purpose of providing accurate records and communicating with team members, parents, administration, and district staff.
  • Provide in-service training and consultation to staff and parents on assistive technology.
  • Serves on District committees, task forces, work groups, , as requested. Keeps abreast of changing developments, trends, instructional and educational technologies.
  • Coordinates the delivery of AT services with classroom teachers, special education staff and other providers to ensure continuity and consistency in providing comprehensive special· education service to students.
  • Collaborates with other district-level service providers as indicated by student needs.
  • Maintains cooperative, professional attitudes with peers and supervisors.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Thorough knowledge of theory, principles and methods in speech pathology and their proper application in educational environments.
  • Knowledge of federal and NC state regulations governing students with disabilities.
  • Knowledge of current literature, trends and developments in the field of speech pathology.
  • Knowledge of current trends in augmentative communication, accessibility, and assistive technology services for public school students.
  • Knowledge of appropriate augmentative communication assessments protocols.
  • Working knowledge of the principles, practices, and ethical standards of assistive technology; relevant state and federal laws, rules and regulations; and applicable district policies and procedures.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
  • Ability to consult and provide training to school personnel in developing and implementing the use of AAC.
  • Strong ability in record-keeping and organizational skills.
  • Ability to transport self between and among school sites throughout the district.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum: Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology. Currently hold or eligible to hold NC teaching license as an SLP.
  • Desirable: Five years’ experience or more as an SLP; supervision experience.

CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license and clean driving record.
  • Possession of one of the following: NC SLP License or NC Teacher License as an SLP.

  • Speech Pathologist/Audiologist Salary Schedule
  • 10.5 Month Position
