FUNCTIONAL PURPOSE: An employee in this class performs journey-level skilled craft work as a roofer and supervises and trains apprentices and other employees in the trade.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Scope of work includes the installation, renovation, or repairs building roofing systems.
  • Work is performed under supervision and in varying weather conditions, typically at moderate heights utilizing ladders and under established and enforced safety conditions and at times requires continuous heavy physical activity.
  • Frequently lift and work above the head.
  • All work is reviewed by General Building Maintenance Supervision and Division Management in progress and upon completion for adherence to established maintenance standards.
  • Perform work in the maintenance, alteration, and repair of roofing systems including but not limited to EPDM, TPO, PVC, Shingle, and Metal roofing systems. Operates a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Inspects roofs, gutters, and drain spouts for leaks and damages and repairs as necessary.
  • Serves as a lead worker on a skilled craft team; assigns and inspects the work of team helper; trains subordinate worker in procedures and methods, use of tools, recognition of materials, and other skills.
  • Reports structural weaknesses or major renovation needs to supervisor.
  • As needed, repair interior and exterior structural features compromised due to damaged or deteriorated roofing systems.
  • Operates a variety of carpentry shop equipment.
  • Will typically be part of a two-man service truck
  • Performs routine cleaning tasks in the work areas
  • On occasion, installs, repairs and renovates all interior and exterior structural features of classrooms and other educational areas of school buildings and support facilities as needed by department supervision.
  • On occasion, assembles, installs and repairs a large variety of classroom and school equipment and furniture as needed by department supervision.
  • On occasion, participates in concrete, masonry work, and flooring replacement and repair as needed by department supervision.
  • Performs related tasks as required.
  • Strict adherence to OSHA safety standards at all times.
  • Attendance to training sessions as available.
  • Assist the Maintenance Division in snow removal as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Journey-Level knowledge of:

  • Standard practices and processes of roofing
  • Materials used in the roofing
  • Tools and equipment used in the roofing

Entry-level knowledge of:

  • Principles and techniques of the various building maintenance
  • Methods, tools, parts, and equipment used in the various building maintenance
  • Occupational hazards and related safety precautions in areas assigned to
  • May be called on to work at different trade areas within the GBM Department at any
  • Ability to successfully complete a mandatory skill-based training program within allowed
  • Ability to detect by inspection faulty, deteriorated, or damaged roofing
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written
  • Ability to operate vehicles
  • Ability to maintain routine
  • Ability to process assigned work orders in a computerized work order
  • Ability to exercise the physical strength and agility necessary to perform job tasks, with a minimum of 50 lbs. lifting and carrying capacity, and occasional 75 lb. lifting capacity.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and school personnel.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum: Graduation from a High School or equivalent.
  • Minimum: Coursework in the department’s building trades and four years of related experience, or a combination of education and experience.

CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Possession of a valid North Carolina Driver’s License.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment screening.

 

Pay Grade LC - $3,046.86 Monthly Salary - Full Time Position
