FUNCTIONAL PURPOSEThe purpose of this position is to work cooperatively with the principal and teacher to provide a classroom environment in which students can take full advantage of the instructional programs and available curriculum and technology materials.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:• Assists children individually or in small groups to help them master assignments and to reinforce learning concepts presented by teachers.
• Supervises students in classroom, hall, cafeterias, school yards, and gymnasiums, or on field trips.
• Instructs and monitors students in the use and care of equipment and materials to prevent injuries and damage.
• Participates in professional learning and PLT meetings, as appropriate, to understand grade level standards, standards-aligned curriculum, and instructional strategies to support student learning.
• Presents subject matter to students under the direction and guidance of teachers, using agreed upon methods of delivery (whole groups, small groups, and/or individual support).
• Assists with student attendance procedures, record keeping, collecting money, organizing classroom learning spaces, and ordering materials.
• Assists the teacher in creating a positive, nurturing, and supportive class environment conducive to learning and developing social emotional skills.
• Prepares lesson materials, bulletin board displays, exhibits, equipment, and demonstrations for their assigned classroom(s).
• Participates in the daily bus, car and van transportation duties involving children’s arrival and departure to and from school.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:• Ability to understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions.
• Ability to work independently, under general supervision.
• Ability to work harmoniously with staff, volunteers, parents, and students.
• Ability to operate and maneuver standard office equipment and specialized classroom equipment.
• Ability to work with student data and maintain confidentiality.
• Ability to provide a broad range of instructional assistance to teachers and others.
• Knowledge of grade appropriate competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of this position.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Minimum: Either of the following:
- Completion of an Associate’s Degree or 48 college credit hours with a grade of “C” or better with a desired concentration in Early Childhood Education or Early Childhood Development.
- High School Diploma/GED AND successful completion of the NC DOL Apprenticeship Program OR Completion of the NC ATA Professional Development Plan.
- If you do not meet the above requirements at this time, you may be eligible for an alternative pathway to becoming a Teacher Assistant in which you have one year to complete both the following requirements:
- Pass the Work Keys-three assessments needed: Reading (4), Mathematics (4), Writing (3)
- Complete 96 hours of in-service training/professional development with WS/FCS
- Desirable: Associates Degree with a concentration in Education PLUS two years working with elementary age children.
