FUNCTIONAL PURPOSE
The purpose of this position is to teach middle and high school students content focused on culinary arts for application in consumer and career settings.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develops lesson plans and provides instruction for the family and consumer science content area of culinary arts and hospitality.
- Instructs students on skills needed in commercial kitchens and other hospitality venues.
- Supervises and works directly with students in classroom laboratory using appropriate production techniques for various tools and equipment in commercial kitchens.
- Ensures normal maintenance of appliance and equipment; ensures that the inventory of materials and supplies is up-to-date and available for student instruction.
- Teaches students how to use industry software, machines, and to follow safety procedures necessary in the restaurant industry.
- Utilizes classroom management techniques conducive to an effective classroom climate.
- Uses appropriate techniques and strategies that promote and enhance critical, creative, and innovative thinking capabilities of students.
- Takes all necessary safety precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of current family and consumer science content and instructional methods, resources, software, and technology related to culinary arts.
- Knowledge and ability to use appropriate equipment, tools, and software for application in a lab setting
- Knowledge of Common Core and NC CTE Essential Standards
- Proficiency in common desktop applications (web browsing, word processing, image editing etc.) required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Minimum: Associates Degree in Culinary Arts, Dietetics, or Food Service Management PLUS two years’ work experience within the past five years in management level position such as chef, restaurant manager, food service manager, catering manager or hospitality.
- Desirable: Bachelor’s Degree in Culinary Arts, Dietetics, or Food Service Management PLUS two years’ work experience teaching content area in the classroom or related industry work within the past five years.
CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS:
- Eligible candidates would hold a 710 Family and Consumer Science Education OR be eligible for a 710 Family and Consumer Science Education license with an appropriate degree and work experience.
- Hold Certifications for Accredited Food Protection Manager and ServSafe
Pay Grade: Certified Teacher Pay Scale - 10 Months - Full Time Position
