FUNCTIONAL PURPOSE:

The purpose of this position is learn from senior mechanics to perform maintenance and minor repair work in the School System Transportation Department. Employee is responsible for learning and performing 30 days bus inspections, minor vehicle sub-assembly checks and making necessary repairs; performing engine oil and oil filter changes; and performing chassis lubrication. Work involves operating a tire truck, evaluating the condition of vehicle tires, and making the decision to replace tires as needed. 

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Always demonstrate a safety mindset; safe buses for students, safe working environment for fellow workers and monitoring safe movements of school and activity buses while operating on public streets and highways are the paramount criteria for this position.
• Assists Mechanics I, II and III in maintenance of vehicles on their assigned routes and in shop under direct supervision. As well as assisting with preparation, sanding, taping and painting of school & activities buses.
• Learn to complete and perform inspection and repair of school bus equipment including but not limited to lights, systems, brakes, seats, leaking seals, coolant leaks, exhaust, tires and systems adhering to OSHA safety standards.
• Clean buses, replace filters, lubricate equipment, inspect and replace parts and components.
• Participate in inventory of parts, supplies, and tools.
• Use laptops with various software for diagnosing bus issues.
• Operate various hand and power tools.
• Learn to operate fuel delivery vehicles; when needed load fuel tanker at bulk fuel facility, fuel school and activity buses on a scheduled, assigned route and maintains accurate records of dispensed fuel.
• Provides accounting documentation to the Parts Foreman for posting and forwarding to the Cost Clerk for entry into the State Vehicle Fleet Management System while maintaining accurate accounting of truck inventory.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Ability to use and care of tools, equipment, and materials used in the maintenance and repair of automotive and related equipment.
• Ability to operate fleet vehicles safely.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to prepare and maintain simple written and electronic records.
• Ability to perform the manual labor associated with major mechanical repair work.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and school personnel.

  

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

• Minimum Education: High school diploma or equivalency  
• Minimum Experience: N/A
• Desirable: Applicable technical trade diploma or one year trade work experience

CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS:

• Possession of valid North Carolina Driver’s License and clean driving record
