Teacher Assistant – Language Facilitator
FUNCTIONAL PURPOSE
The purpose of this position is to provide support to EC students who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing (DHH) through access to pre-teaching, explaining, simplifying, repeating and reviewing content in the classroom. The Language Facilitator also supports skills such as self-advocacy, listening technology management and care, and overall independence in the educational setting. The Language Facilitator works under the direct supervision of the DHH Teacher, who maintains full responsibility for instruction, progress reporting and overall development of the student.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides student with background information prior to classroom lesson (example: frontloading vocabulary and concepts).
- Assists with identifying the optimal place for student to sit for optimal visual and auditory access to instruction in the classroom.
- Adapts classroom lesson to the individual student’s language level.
- Implements accommodations and modifications to include proper care and use of assistive technology.
- Monitors utilization of amplification devices and assists with providing daily maintenance.
- Provides language modeling and instruction by facilitating interactions with others.
- Monitors student’s comprehension and reinforces/reviews concepts and vocabulary when necessary.
- Documents topic of instruction and student’s progression in designated skill area and communicates information to DHH team.
- Serves as liaison between regular education and DHH teachers.
- Participates in regularly scheduled planning and training sessions with DHH team and classroom teachers.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions.
- Knowledge of amplification devices and assistive technologies used in the DHH arena.
- Ability to work harmoniously with staff, volunteers, parents, and students.
- Ability to operate and maneuver standard office equipment and specialized classroom equipment.
- Ability to work with student data and maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to provide a broad range of instructional assistance to assigned DHH students.
- Knowledge of grade-appropriate competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of this position.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Minimum: Either of the following:
- Completion of an Associate’s Degree or 48 college credit hours
- High School Diploma/GED AND successful completion of the NC DOL Apprenticeship Program OR Completion of the NC ATA Professional Development Plan.
- If you do not meet the above requirements at this time, you may be eligible for an alternative pathway to becoming a Teacher Assistant in which you have one year to complete both the following requirements:
- Pass the Work Keys-three assessments needed: Reading (4), Mathematics (4), Writing (3)
- Complete 96 hours of in-service training/professional development with WS/FCS
- Desirable: Associates Degree with a concentration in Education PLUS two years working with elementary age children.
Pay Grade 55 - $2,706.63 Monthly Salary - Full Time Position
