Custodian – Lead
FUNCTIONAL PURPOSE:
Performs responsible semi-skilled and lead worker duties in the cleaning and care of the school system's buildings and grounds.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Performs the duties of custodian as required.
- Assists the Area Leader in the preparation of work schedules.
- Verifies daily attendance and submits payroll corrections to Area Leader.
- Evaluates the daily attendance of custodial staff.
- Inspects work performed to ensure that it meets expectations and established standards.
- Implements alternative plans during periods of limited staffing.
- Records and reports any personnel related issues.
- Trains new staff in the use of cleaning chemicals, equipment, and related supplies and materials.
- Receives and verifies orders.
- Coordinates activities with other departments to ensure service is provided efficiently.
- Coordinates and participates in the cleaning of an assigned area in the school system’s buildings.
- Inspects the work of other custodians assigned to that facility and trains new workers.
- Monitors boilers, heating, and air conditioning systems, adjusts as necessary, notifies appropriate trades personnel when problems occur.
- Inspects and evaluates the physical condition of facilities to determine the type of work required.
- Unlocks and secures facilities as required.
- Cleans bathroom fixtures and floors and replaces paper and soap.
- Mops, vacuums, buffs, and dust mops floors.
- Cleans desks, windows, water fountains, empties trash.
- Orders or requests cleaning supplies and equipment in order to maintain adequate inventory for crew.
- Moves furniture, strips, and waxes floors.
- Replaces light bulbs and cleans fixtures as required.
- Ensure public grounds are clean.
- Performs snow removal as required.
- Performs related duties as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Considerable knowledge of the methods, equipment, and supplies used in the cleaning and appearance of buildings and grounds.
- Considerable knowledge of the routine maintenance requirements of buildings, grounds, and equipment used.
- Knowledge of school purchasing procedures.
- Ability to identify cleaning needs and address with appropriate methods and supplies.
- Ability to monitor, coordinate, and give appropriate feedback on the work of other custodial personnel.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, school officials, other employees, and the general public.
- Ability to keep simple records.
- Knowledge of basic computer skills.
- Physical strength is necessary to perform manual tasks.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Minimum: High School Diploma/GED and three years’ full-time custodial experience.
- Desirable: High School Diploma/GED and four years’ custodial full-time experience with two years’ increasing responsible leadership experience.
