FUNCTIONAL PURPOSE
Performs a variety of semi-skilled journey level work in the maintenance and care of grounds, playing fields, rights-of-way and related school system owned property. May occasionally be required to lead a small group of workers.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Performs grounds maintenance duties using, mowers, tractors, snow removal equipment, and other light to medium duty power equipment and hand tools.
- Checks equipment to ensure proper operation. Performs minor troubleshooting and maintenance.
- Receives work assignments, assemble and load material and needed equipment, for transportation to the work site.
- Drives trucks and dump trucks to transport workers, equipment, and materials.
- Cuts and trims lawns, edges and blows sidewalks and curbs.
- Removes trash from lawns, and parking areas.
- Sprays lawns, driveways, parking lots, beds, walking tracks, paths, playgrounds, fence lines, etc. with herbicides using backpack or powered sprayers.
- Conditions and prepares soils for planting.
- Plants grass, flowers, bulbs, seeds, trees, and shrubs.
- Weeds, mulches, and waters plant beds.
- Fertilizes plants and lawns.
- Removes damaged trees, branches, and twigs.
- Maintains paths and road surfaces.
- Maintains storm drains.
- Installs signs in parking lots and along driveways.
- Removes or mulches leaves.
- Prunes shrubs and trees, to shape and improve growth.
- Assists the Maintenance Division in snow removal as needed.
- Clears snow from driveways, parking lots, and sidewalks.
- May occasionally lead a small group of workers.
- Ensures that work is completed in a safe, efficient, and effective manner; responds to all incidents and inquires.
- Performs related duties as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of the tools, materials and equipment used in grounds maintenance.
- General knowledge of the hazards and safety practices related to the work.
- Knowledge of safety precautions applicable to the duties of this class.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to use hand tools.
- Ability to operate and make minor repairs to machinery and equipment.
- Ability to engage in heavy manual labor for extensive periods of time in a variety of weather conditions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, supervisors, employees, and the public.
- Follows OSHA and safety procedures, which may include, department protocols, appropriate attire, and observing weight limits as it relates to utilizing portable extension ladders and step ladders.
- Position requires the ability to work occasional scheduled overtime and be available for emergency overtime when the need arises by responding to after-hours emergencies, which may include weekends and holidays.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Minimum: High School Diploma/GED
- Minimum: Valid NC Driver’s License
- Minimum: Two years’ experience in the maintenance and repair of grounds and equipment, or an equivalent combination of training and experience
CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS:
Pay Grade LA -Pay Rate $2,892.24 Monthly - Full-Time - 12 months
